A Curator’s Tale – One Curator, Many Stories: A Journey to Jeju Biennale.

By Moon Rohaizan.

As I pondered my next career steps, I received an unexpected offer to co-curate the 4th Jeju Biennale in Jeju, South Korea, set for November 26th to February 16th, 2025. I was, quite literally, “shocketh” in my PJs.

Curating has always drawn me in. There’s something magical about weaving multiple narratives from various artworks into a single, cohesive experience. How do you tell one story through the voices of many artists, without diluting their essence? That challenge is part of what makes curating so rewarding. And to be entrusted with this on an international stage feels surreal.

Am I nervous? Definitely. Anxious? For sure. Stressed? Abso-freaking-lutely! But opportunities like this don’t just knock – they find you when the time is right. Despite the nerves, I’m grateful for a chance to grow, even as I navigate the complexities of medically diagnosed depression. This project offers a meaningful, positive challenge that adds vibrance to my career journey, one step at a time.

More to share in my next post, as I settle into Jeju and make it my home for an entire month. Each day here is a new layer of discovery, from the artists I’m meeting to the landscapes that greet me every morning. I can already feel this place reshaping my perspective—not only on art but on the process of curating and the unexpected ways it intertwines with the rhythms of a new place.

The next few weeks promise a whirlwind of collaboration, inspiration, and a few inevitable surprises (the kind that make for good stories, I hope). Stay tuned as I dive deeper into this journey—who knows what Jeju and the Biennale have in store!
